Maui and the Yamamotos: Furry Friends Fur-Ever Tail
“Originally named Cannon when we adopted him,” says Alex, “we changed it to Maui. We wanted to keep his name in the beach theme, and we had just gotten back from our second trip to Maui, a place we really love, filled with so many happy memories.
“Maui is our third cat, and although I’ve always wanted a black cat, my husband Brodie wanted a cuddly cat since Leo our Bengal isn’t much of one. We had lost our other cat Marlo a few months earlier and we wanted one with some similar characteristics. While Maui was slow to open up to us, he just felt right.
“Along with Leo, we have two dogs, and seeing how shy Maui was, we wanted him to adjust slowly and comfortably. In fact, he had our extra large bedroom all to himself, complete with litter box and climbing furniture. He would hide during the day and then cuddle and play all night. Now, he and the dogs love roughhousing and playing chase together.
“Maui has brought us so many laughs and warm cuddles that he’s the perfect addition to our family. I was six months pregnant when we adopted him and he would cuddle up to my belly all the time. We think he and our baby Rhett are going to be longtime pals, with lots of adventures ahead.
“Maui goes after any and all toys: kickers, ribbon cat toys and ones filled with catnip. He also loves to explore (supervised) the backyard on sunny days, chasing the flies. He’s such a lover when he wants to be, but sometimes he just goes from 0 - 60 when he wants to play or be mischievous. We also have a cat wheel that he runs on.
“And he LOVES to eat! When I make bagels, he gets a small lick of cream cheese. He especially enjoys freeze-dried chicken treats and tries eating everyone else’s food.
“At night, Maui either sleeps with us or in Blu, the yorkie’s bed.”
